A New York Adventure

Spent my summer falling in love with NYC. Took side trips to San Antonio & Austin, TX and Boston, MA.

First glimpse of the city

Taken from the cab ride from JFK airport, this was my first glimpse of the Big Apple.

The apartment in Chelsea

This was to be my home for the next seven weeks. Thank you to Stephanie at thoughtbot for finding me such a great place to live!

Jazz Lawn Party

Eric at thoughtbot invited me to a rather wonderful Jazz Lawn Party on Governors Island.

After the main event we took a tour round the island proper.

The High Line

This was the first of many excursions down the New York High Line.

Flatiron Building

I took a walk over to 5th Avenue to see the famous Flatiron Building. While I was there I also checked out Madison Square Park.

Hiking Upstate

The original plan was to hike Breakneck Ridge, but unfortunately the trail was closed due to some hikers getting in trouble. We did the next best thing and found another trail to hike. I loved that the train just dropped us off next to the track.

The views from the top were spectacular!

My second High Line excursion. Took a bit more time on this one.

Boat cruise on the Hudson

While in New York City I got chance to go to the annual GORUCO conference. The after party was held on a cruise ship that took a tour round the Hudson River and the New York Bay.

Pride

New York Pride happened while I was in town so I hopped on over to 5th to take a look. Rainbows… rainbows everywhere!

Brooklyn Bridge

I took an evening stroll over Brooklyn Bridge.

smorgasburg

Smorgasburg is a food flea market in Brooklyn. I tried oysters for the first time!

Exploring Central Park

It was a rather grey day, but it was still warm and made for a pleasant stroll around Central Park.

Fourth of July

For Independence day I ended up at a baseball game (Let’s go Mets!).

Dumbo

Exploring DUMBO (Down Under Manhattan Bridge Underpass). Some great views of the Brooklyn Bridge from here.

Top of the Rock

Some of the best views of Manhattan can be had from the top of the Rockefeller Center at 50th St and 5th Ave. The view across Central Park was particularly moving!

New England Road Trip

I got invited to go on a road trip to the Berkshires in Massachusetts. On the way we paid a visit to Sheffield, which is the namesake of my birthplace in the UK.

Texas

Visiting a friend in San Antonio that I hadn’t seen for 12 years! I also stopped off in Austin to visit the thoughtbot office there.

We went on a bus tour of San Antonio. It was… interesting! We learnt that the Holiday Inn was the first to ever open in Texas (true fact!).

I had a free Saturday evening so I took a stroll around Hudson River Park.

We organised a pre Summer Summit baseball game visit for London thoughtbotters. On the way back we stopped in Time Square for a quick look.

Summer Summit Day Trip

For thoughtbot’s Summer Summit I took a bunch of us on a tour of the High Line and the Whitney Museum. This is my neighbourhood now!

Summit Boat Party

The main Summer Summit event was a lovely boat party that took us on a tour of the East River and the Upper New York Bay.

USS Growler (SSG-577)

An early cruise missile submarine of the Grayback class, was the fourth ship of the United States Navy to be named after the growler. The Growler is moored right next to the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum.

Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum

The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum had some fantastic stuff to look at, including a Lockheed A-12 (the predecessor to the SR-71 Blackbird), Concorde and of course the Space Shuttle Enterprise.

Twiga

We went to see thoughtbotter Jaclyn’s band “Twiga” at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. Beforehand we went to Surf Bar, Brooklyn for food and cocktails.
